CAROUSEL, AVA & TATE MODERN PRESENT {PAIRED} WITH YOJI TOKUYOSHI AND GILLES PETERSON

29/07/2024

Carousel and AVA festival have joined forces once again to present their next game-changing edition of {PAIRED} on Friday 13th September. Bringing together Yoji Tokuyoshi and Gilles Peterson for another epic chef x DJ pairing, this time they’re heading to The Corner at Tate Modern, home to the world’s most exciting modern and contemporary art.

The idea is simple: put talented people together from complementary disciplines and watch as the magic unfolds, with co-created menus and soundtracks weaving together shared influences. Inspired by the rich and fertile creative terrain where food, music and experience overlap, each pairing is a one-off, unique to that time and place and the audience who’s there to experience it.

Legendary broadcaster and DJ, Gilles Peterson, renowned for his genre-spanning sets and influence on the global music scene, will be curating a bespoke soundtrack for the evening, carefully selecting tracks to complement the innovative flavours crafted by Japanese culinary icon, Yoji Tokuyoshi, and the chef’s own eclective musical tastes. The creative mind behind the Michelin-starred Tokuyoshi in Milan, reborn as Bentoteca since 2020, Yoji’s menu will feature his signature fusion of traditional Japanese techniques with modern culinary creativity, combined with influences from Gilles Peterson’s culinary adventures.

Kicking off at 7pm in The Corner at the Tate Modern, guests will be treated to Yoji Tokuyoshi’s five-course set menu (£125 pp). Yoji will share a stage in heart of the dining room with Gilles Peterson, whose hyper-curated DJ set will take guests on a synchronised musical journey, course by course.

The multisensory feast can also be taken up a notch by booking a VIP table (+£15 pp) which includes table service throughout the night, or by adding a drinks pairing to their dining experience, available to purchase on the evening.

Those who have opted for a bar ticket (£35 pp), can join the party from 9pm to catch the second half of Gilles Peterson’s dinner set, while enjoying drinks and katsu sandos inspired by Yoji’s cult Katsusanderia.

From 10:30pm, The Corner will be transformed into an intimate music venue with an evening set from Gilles Peterson playing until 02:00am.

General and VIP dinner tickets include access to the afterparty, while bar ticket holders can enjoy the event from 9pm with drinks and snacks available for purchase. After party only tickets can be purchased for £30pp.

{PAIRED} at the Tate Modern is the latest in a long line of successful creative collaborations between brothers Ed and Ollie Templeton, and Sarah McBriar, founder of AVA, “one of the world’s most exciting electronic festivals” (Mixmag).

Tickets go on sale Thursday 1st August at 10am exclusively via

TALENT

Gilles Peterson - DJ

Broadcaster, DJ and record collector, Gilles Peterson, has played a pivotal role in supporting forward-thinking underground music in the UK and beyond over the past three decades. Throughout his career, he has promoted the new frontiers of jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music and has been recognised for his work with a myriad of awards, from an MBE in 2004 and an AIM Award for Indie Champion 2013, to a Mixmag Award for Outstanding Contribution To Dance Music in 2013, and The A&R Award from The Music Producers Guild in 2019.

Yoji Tokuyoshi - Chef Patron - Tokuyoshi

Japanese chef Yoji Tokuyoshi combines Japanese techniques and aesthetics with traditional Italian flavours in his cooking. He describes his cooking style as "cucina Italiana contaminata", or ‘contaminated’ Italian food, and considers himself to be an Italian chef with a Japanese background. After working in Italian restaurants in Tokyo, Tokuyoshi made his way to Italy where he worked alongside Massimo Bottura at Osteria Francescana for almost a decade, before moving to Milan for the opening of Tokuyoshi. Alongside Bentoteca, the post-pandemic evolution of his Michelin-starred debut restaurant, Yoji has several other critically-acclaimed projects in both Tokyo and Milan.
